GPS FAQ

Should I purchase a Bluetooth (wireless) GPS device or CF (Compact Flash) GPS device for my PDA?

All PDAs will accept one Bluetooth device and one CF Card device. This means that if you are running APIC with another bluetooth device (such as a WxWorx Weather Receiver) you will need to use a CF Card GPS.

Bluetooth GPS Receivers are very reliable and are nice when you don't want to have to deal with the hassle of running cords throughout your airplane. The only risk involved is your GPS receiver running out of batteries (although most GPS receivers have a 20-30 hour battery life).

CF Card GPS plugs directly into your PDA, is very easy to connect, requires little maintenance, and no external power source other than your PDA. Today CF Card slots are rarely included in new devices because they are so bulky, so you will probably only be able to use a CF GPS if you have an older PDA..

You should pick the GPS receiver that best fits your need.

NOTE: If you are using a XM Bluetooth Weather Kit with your PDA, then purchase a CF GPS receiver.

Should I purchase a Bluetooth (wireless) GPS receiver, USB serial GPS, or CF GPS device for my Tablet/Laptop?

Many Tablets/Laptops only are not Bluetooth Enabled. Make sure to check your device's specifications before purchasing a GPS receiver. You can add Bluetooth capability to any Tablet/Laptop by connecting a Bluetooth Dongle to the USB port.

USB GPS Receivers are also very reliable, and are nice because you don't have to have any external power source other than your Tablet/Laptop. If you don't mind having the cord connected to your Tablet/Laptop, then a USB GPS is a great choice.
